Your county government and school boards

Virginia has 95 counties and 38 independent cities, and a city is not part of any county, so city residents are served by the city government alone. Most counties are run by an elected Board of Supervisors (Arlington has a County Board), and each city by an elected City Council.

The Virginia General Assembly

The 2027 session starts on Wednesday, January 13, 2027.

Committee and subcommittee meetings are open, and you do not need to register in advance to speak in person. House committees and subcommittees also take remote testimony and written comments through HODSpeak. For Senate committees, sign up to testify on the Senate video page; Senate subcommittees do not take remote public testimony. Some public hearings require advance registration.
